Wood worker Howard k Lobb

With the encouragement of friends, huge loving suport of my wife and the grace of my God, I get to do what it is I love,,, I am truly blessed.
Welcome to a site dedicated to a passion for woodworking,,,, This site is meant to read like a journal of my exploration and adventures in the intimate world of wood, tools, a studio,  and life filled with a curiousity ,,, A window to view a simple life,,,, lived well and well lived,,,

A Small Desk Top Cabinet

Picture
This Broadleaf Maple cabinet was the final project at the Inside Passage School of Fine Woodworking. The intense burled figured wood was from a log that was buried in a swamp for 4 years. A very exciting find. The  figure captured in the log is dynamic. Though this made for a difficult wood to work as it had absorbed silica from the dirt it was submerged in, making it a very difficult challenge to keep sharp tools and to finish to the high degree I envisioned. I believe that it was well worth the effort for this unique piece.

Solid wood and Handmade Curved Venier

Picture
The solid wood top, bottom, sides and inserts carry the figure and the curved back panel venier all taken from one single slab. The abstract pattern, I feel, is one of the determining factors in the design and size of this project.
The concept of this piece developed from an idea of a much larger piece. In the conceptual drawing there were legs, doors and drawers, although my allowable  working time was the deciding factor for it's size. As it worked it's self out I think it was a good choice for this wood to keep it small and open. A larger piece would have been way to busy and resulted in  an overpowering presence with this dominating figure. The curved sculpted surfaces I felt, fit well with the figure, and tactile experience would add to the beconning of touch. Definately a learning curve so to speak,,, I am keeping the original idea open to another piece...another time.

The life of art,
the art of life,
one in the same,
connected by passion...

Wholeheartedness is a precious gift, but no one can actually give it to you. You have to find the path that has heart and then walk it impeccably....It's like someone laughing in your ear, challenging you to figure out what to do when you don't know what to do. It humbles you. It opens your heart.

The words, they are ramblings of a simple nature

This purpose,
a simple life,
well lived,
lived well.
Living on pupose requires us to find what we love fiercely,
give it all we've got,
and then pass it on,
as if it were a torch,
to those who follow.

Love is in the doing,
always take time to love,
 love what you do,
 take the time.
The extravagant gesture
is the very stuff of creation
